Retreats

The Place of Peace offers retreat time within a quiet protected contemplative enviroment of steady daily training in the company of a senior monastic.

There are scheduled group retreats where guests can either stay at the temple or, if they prefer, in a local B&B. Guests are also welcome to stay at other times. It is recommended that a first visit be during a group event.

We offer two private retreat rooms as well as shared accommodation. All meals are in the meditation hall.

These retreats are open to anyone who has received meditation instruction from a monk or lay minister of our Order.

The Dharma talks offered during the retreats will reflect the needs of those who attend. Guests are invited to request talks on any aspect of Buddhist training and to discuss issues that are current in their practice.

October 14 - 16

Bodhidharma Weekend
Bodhidharma took the Zen teaching from India to China and is our First Founder or Ancestor. During a time of discussion and debate he taught, by example, the value of direct insight through silent meditation and steadfast daily practice. We look at his profound teaching on The Four Parts to the Way of Practice, which are as relevant to us today as they were then. Concludes with a Ceremony of Gratitude to Bodhidharma.

November 6

Memorial for Reverend Master Jiyu-Kennett
This meditation morning begins at 10.30 and includes the Memorial Ceremony and a Dharma Talk.

November
11 - 13

Autumn Retreat
This offers an opportunity to put everything down and 'just be'. Turning the gaze within we quietly offer ourself as one who wishes to be taught, who wants to hear and is willing to be guided by the Dharma.

December
2 - 4

Buddha's Enlightenment
The Jewels of Enlightenment lie deep within our humanity. As daily training draws us ever closer into the heart of the sitting place, faith deepens and we find ourselves wanting to go where the call of the Unborn beckons. Includes the Ceremony of Buddha's Enlightenment.

December 30 to
January 2

New Year Retreat
Open to those who have already attended The Place of Peace. This has the usual Ceremonies of the New Year and will include quiet time. Guests are welcome to attend for all or part of the retreat.

March
2 - 4

The Next Step
At the beginning of a new year we reflect upon what it means for each of us to 'go on'. What is the next step in our individual training?

March 3
to
April 1

Responding To a Need
What does life ask of us and are we responding to that call? Do we understand our spiritual needs and are we resolving our karma or adding to it? Is 'the important thing' being taken care of? How do we
"cherish the longing deep" within us?
Includes a simple Ceremony of Feeding the Hungry Ghosts.

April
27 - 29

Precepts Weekend
We look at the heart and spirit of the Precepts and at how the highest Precept is to take Refuge in Buddha,
( meditation ), for this is the source of both the Precepts and the awareness that enables us to see where
change is needed. At Jukai we are asked, " Is it your wish to be a Buddhist"?, we reply, " It is". How do we fulfill that wish.

May 6

Festival of Wesak
This meditation morning begins at 10.30 and includes the Ceremony of Wesak, ( The Buddha's Birth ), and
a Dharma Talk.

May
11 - 13

Listening
Meditation, contemplation and listening are all inextricably linked. When we train all our senses turn within to serve and work in harmony with the process of training. By making ourselves available to the teaching, in whatever form it may present itself, our ability to listen becomes as a net, ever ready to catch the smallest prompting of the still small voice

All weekend retreats begin at 6pm on Friday and end after lunch on Sunday. Local Sangha are welcome to attend as non residents.
